On my way back from photographing an old amusement park and a Native American heritage site in southwest Oklahoma (a story for another time), a friend and
I decided to take a quick detour through the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge.
It's hard to drive through the Wichita Mountains without spotting the free-roaming bison—unless, of course, you're chasing a tornado! The wildlife refuge
is one of the few places where these magnificent creatures roam freely, and their population is slowly making a comeback after being nearly wiped out in the late
1800s. Seeing them in person is truly awe-inspiring, especially when they lock eyes with you, as if staring straight into your soul.
