May 25th, 2015, will likely remain one of my top 15 storm chase days. Alongside a few others from New York, I began the day
in southeast Colorado, following a developing storm. This storm quickly transformed into an awe-inspiring HP (high precipitation)
supercell. Although tornado warnings were issued for over an hour, no tornado appeared—unless it was hidden in the dense rain
and hail.
As the storm approached the Colorado/Kansas border, it transitioned into an outflow-dominant system, forming this incredible
shelf cloud. I spent the next 30 minutes chasing it along the highway, trying to capture the perfect shot of it looming over
railroad tracks.
Afterward, my group and I headed to southwest Kansas, where we encountered dueling nighttime tornadoes in heavy fog and
50-degree temperatures. The tornadoes moved through a wind farm and skirted just west of Dodge City.
An HP supercell that evolved into a remarkable shelf cloud, paired with the nighttime tornadoes, undoubtedly makes this
one of the standout days of 2015.
